Choosing the right ethernet cable

The two most important things to consider when choosing ethernet cables is the speed it offers and the length. For connections in close proximity, ethernet cables of a few metres length is sufficient though longer cables are needed for connecting to a LAN port located farther away. Category labels on ethernet cables

While buying ethernet cables, it is important to check the category number, often mentioned as Cat 4, Cat 5, Cat 6 and so on. The numbers correspond to the bandwidth offered and higher the number mentioned on the cable, higher is the bandwidth it can offer. Expect high speeds with Cat 5 and above and choose them for maximum download/upload speed.
